Bomb disposal
causes concern
By William Marshall
On-line Forty-Niner
At approximately
12:30 p.m. Thursday, a loud explosion was heard across the
city of Long Beach and caused quite a stir among students
at Cal State Long Beach.
"I thought for sure it was the Afghanis dropping some
bombs on us," said Jon Dosman, a freshman psychology
major.
Fortunately for us, it was the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station,
where a small collection of explosive devices were purposely
detonated in a controlled area on the base.
According to Gregg Smith, public affairs officer at the naval
base, the explosives had been left in an underground bunker
sometime between the 1940s and '50s.
"The explosives were disposed of as part of the Naval
Station's environmental clean up that has been going on for
the last few years," Smith said.
