Jobs to spare at career, college fair

By Tom Carey
On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach's Pyramid will host the state's largest college fair tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will draw more than 200 representatives from colleges, universities, businesses and nonprofit agencies to help answer questions that students and parents might have.

"The career/college night [at CSULB] is considered the granddaddy of college fairs in the state," said Valerie Bordeaux, director of CSULB's University Outreach and School Relations. "It's a good time for students to visit college reps and gain info on career choices."

According to Veronica Valdez, a representative from the Long Beach Unified School District, the career and college night is a chance for high school and grade school students to explore the career paths that colleges and universities offer.

In the past, attendance at the fair has reached 4,000 and this year appears to be no different, Valdez said. This could be attributed to the fact that many companies and organizations will be on hand to answer questions regarding careers, such as the FBI, Wells Fargo, Disney and the California Highway Patrol.

"The event will be well attended," Valdez said. "It's to help students get an early start in their careers. In the past we have had students from other states schedule their family vacations around the fair in order to attend the event."

CSULB will be one of the highlighted universities showcased at the fair as well as other local colleges such as Long Beach City College.

According to Valdez Toyota, one of the event's sponsors, will be providing transportation from Jordan, Wilson, and Cabrillo High Schools in a continuous loop.

The event is open to the general public and all CSULB students are urged to attend. For more information, contact Valdez at (562) 989-7872, ext. 293.
