Tahoe trumped
king of skiing and nightlife
By Amber Wenzel
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner
Lake Tahoe is home
to the largest concentration of ski resorts in all of North
America. With over 14 ski resorts and many casinos just miles
from each other, it makes a great winter getaway.
Lake Tahoe lies
6,225 feet above sea level in the Sierra Nevada mountain range,
straddling the state line between California and Nevada. Those
in the mood for fun and entertainment head to the Nevada side
of the lake, where ski resorts and the lure of the jackpot
draw them into the glittering casinos.
On the South Shore of this natural wonder are a small group
of top-quality casinos that provide the fun for which Nevada
nightlife is famous. Tahoe offers many places to stay within
minutes from casino nightlife.
Caesars Tahoe is known throughout the world as a leader in
Nevada-style nightlife. From good food to good times,
Caesars Tahoe is one of Lake Tahoe's most spectacular casino
resorts. All of Caesars Tahoe's 440 rooms have amazing views
of Lake Tahoe or the surrounding Sierras, most with luxurious
Roman Tubs. Each room reservation offers a choice of one king
bed or two doubles. Planet Hollywood, as well as several other
restaurants are located within Caesars. A two-night ski package
starts at $150 per night, per room. This includes one
day of skiing or riding per person and two daily brunch buffet.
With ski areas and casinos just miles from each other Days
Inn South Lake Tahoe makes an affordable winter getaway.
Days Inn is nestled in the heart of town, just minutes from
ski resorts, casino nightlife and restaurants. Days
Inn accommodations include a free continental breakfast, free
shuttles to ski resorts and casinos, and a year-round hot
tub spa. Sunday through Saturday rates range from $39
to $120 for a queen-size bed, and $49 to $160 for two doubles.
Does skiing and riding on wide-open bowls, through snow-covered
trees, nose deep in forested powder-stashes, down a series
of natural chutes, through unique terrain and halfpipes sound
exciting? With over 17,520 acres of terrain and an average
snowfall of more than 33 feet, lake Tahoe is home to the largest
concentration of ski resorts in all of North America with
15 ski resorts to choose from.
Located on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Valley
is the region's largest mountain resort, featuring Tahoe's
highest elevation and longest vertical drop.
Skiers and riders can glide for miles between both California
and Nevada on a mountain descent that is more than five miles
long. Heavenly Valley is located within a couple minutes
drive or bus ride from the big casinos and a tremendous number
of hotels and motels. Adult ski lift tickets are $57.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort offers over 2,000 acres of skiing
with a good mix of runs for skiers and riders of all abilities.
Northern California's highest base elevation makes Kirkwood
home to some of the Sierra's deepest, driest snow. Kirkwood
is about a 30-minute drive from the South Lake Tahoe resort
hotels and casinos. Ski lift tickets are $49.
Valerie Rivera, a CSULB senior who went to Lake Tahoe last
year, stayed in South Lake Tahoe and went riding at Kirkwood.
Rivera said she also liked visiting all the casinos.
South Lake Tahoe is a year-round playground with its historic
charm and modern conveniences and is one of the most unique
places in the world to experience pleasure. With casinos
and ski resorts within miles from each other it makes a great
winter getaway.
