Alumna directing the flow of music

By Dwight Flenniken III
On-line Forty-Niner

KROQ (106.7) Music Director Lisa Worden held an open discussion about jobs in the music industry during a visit Friday to Cal State Long Beach.

Worden, a CSULB alumna, has been the music director at KROQ for the past seven years. She grew up in Diamond Bar and graduated from CSULB in 1993 with a degree in business administration.

During her time at Long Beach she served as an intern for SBK Records. She then moved to RCA Records as an assistant, and through her contacts at RCA landed a position at KROQ.

"My job at KROQ is finding songs to play on the radio," Worden said. "My focus is the music."

Much of the event, held in the University Student Union Small Auditorium, was geared toward students finding work after graduation in the very large music industry. Those in attendance ranged from communications majors to members of up and coming bands.

Worden, who answered questions in a informal manner, said her job duties change each day. Every Monday she takes time to meet with about 25 labels, and the first Monday of each month she sees smaller independent labels.

She explained how each recording label is allowed approximately 15 minutes to pitch bands they feel are on the rise.

"Labels come at me constantly to try and get their bands played," Worden said.

Business major Parrish Shope said she thought the lecture was intriguing.

"I am interested in finding out what her specific job included, and things she does on a daily basis," Shope said.

Worden said it is nice to have her degree to fall back on in the turbulence of the music industry. However, Worden said her CSULB degree was not necessary in obtaining her current job.

K-BEACH radio and the University Union Newspaper sponsored the event.

More media discussions are on the way, according to John Trapper, a university student media advisor.
