Foundation board discusses money matters

By Larry W. Brunson Jr.
On-line Forty-Niner

A $15 million request, Cal State Long Beach's Technology Park and customer service within the Foundation Building are a few additions students should look for in the upcoming semester.

Every quarter the board of directors of the Cal State Long Beach Foundation hold a meeting to discuss financial reports regarding the campus, as well as going over budgets, and other financial issues that effect the university.

The meeting, which took place Aug. 17, included a routine review of the budget for CSULB this school year, according to CSULB President Robert Maxson,

"Everything is in order, and the budget looks really good for this year," Maxson said.

One of the items discussed at the meeting was the funding for the Center for the Community Development of Transportation Technology, according to Wendy Keener, executive assistant of the CSULB Foundation.

"The board is seeking $15 million from the Senate and the House of Representatives for funding of the CCDoTT for 2002, and we will know if our request was approved later next month," Keener said.

The university is also in the process of its annual financial audit with Windes and McClaughry, an accounting firm, but Keener doesn't anticipate any major findings.

Also discussed, by Mo Tidemanis, director of property development for CSULB, was the CSULB Technology Park provided by the U.S. Navy

The park, located on Pacific Coast Highway near the Terminal Island, will provide a wide range of instructional programs for students and faculty, according to Tidemanis.

The Technology Park is in the first phase of its ground lease with the Watt Community Properties. Tidemanis said. Currently, the board is securing financing and construction for the facilities.

A grant was also provided by the Economic Development Administration that will provide infrastructure improvements, as well as providing dry utility and landscaping work for the facilities at the park, according to Tidemanis.

In addition to budgetary items, the board also discussed the quality of customer service within the CSULB Foundation for students and faculty who interact with the Foundation, Keener said.

"The Foundation is improving customer service to the campus," Keener said. "The entire Foundation is going through a customer service initiative where everyone in-house will be trained in customer services skills."

The Foundation Board of Directors business meetings are held quarterly to discuss the financial issues of the CSULB Foundation.  For more information on the meetings one may call (562) 985-8514.
