Writers tell L.A. stories

By Jamie Rogers
On-line Forty-Niner

More than five years ago freelance writer David Ulin relocated from New York to Los Angeles. In that time, he compiled an anthology of essays, poems and short stories by 37 Los Angeles writers. "Another City: Writing from Los Angeles," published in September, went straight to the Los Angeles Times bestseller list.

Ulin and four authors featured in the anthology will present a reading Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Cal State Long Beach Faculty Development Center on the fifth floor of the University Library.

Gerald Locklin, Lisa Glatt, David Hernandez and Rob Roberge will appear in the event sponsored by the department of English and the English Students Association. Poets & Writers, Inc. is helping to support the event through a grant from the James Irving Foundation.

Locklin, a CSULB professor of English has published approximately 80 volumes of poetry and fiction. He said he plans on reading the short poem published in Ulin's book as well as some other works before participating in a question and answer period.

Glatt, a CSULB graduate and adjunct professor, wrote the highly successful collections of poems "Monsters and Other Lovers," and "Shelter."

"She is a widely published fiction writer and very highly regarded in the country," Locklin said. "She is very well known in the community and the students love her."

Hernandez, who is married to Glatt, is also a CSULB graduate. His poems and drawings have appeared in numerous publications, including "Cream City Review," "Passages North," and "Prairie Schooner."

"David Hernandez is an excellent poet and excellent artist," Locklin said. "He is equally talented in both."

Joan Job Smith, editor of the Long Beach-based Pearl Literary Magazine, will also speak at the event.

"She is a well-known Long Beach poet," Locklin said. "She is one of the editors of Pearl Press and she is an editor of the Burkowski Journal."

Ulin's anthology covers the spectrum of the diversity of the Los Angeles literary world. The event is the first in this year's Visiting Writers Series.
