Rebecca Smith's
networking skills and organization involvement paid off this
semester when she was awarded three scholarships to help fund
her schooling.
Smith, a senior majoring in human resources management and
president of the Human Resources Management Association, was
awarded more than $3,000 through various human resources firms.
The Cheryl Troy/Craig Wood Memorial Scholarship awarded her
$2,000 from the Professionals in Human Resources Association
Foundation. Troy and Wood were both human resources professionals
who were murdered in the workplace earlier this year.
"At first I felt bad for receiving an award, but then
I realized the importance of setting up a scholarship under
their names," Smith said. "There is so much work
to be done regarding workplace violence and employee relations
that it just makes me want to work harder at creating a better
workplace environment."
Smith received the Locher Scholarship, which is in the amount
of $500 each for the fall and spring semesters. The Professionals
in Human Resources Association Foundation District 7 awarded
her $250.
"If it weren't for being involved in a student organization,
[Human Resources Management Association] and [Professionals
in Human Resources Association Foundation], I wouldn't have
heard of these scholarships," Smith said.
Smith's involvement in the Human Resource Management Association
led her to these scholarships. It was through networking within
these organizations that she discovered these opportunities.
"Becoming involved has really enhanced my college experience
and has given me so many opportunities to network," Smith
said. "I am meeting so many HR professionals that have
helped and I am sure will continue to guide me through my
career."
Smith is graduating in May and plans to gain experience as
a human resources generalist but would eventually like to
focus on training and development.
"There are so many scholarships available and many that
only have a few applicants, Smith said. "I didn't think
that I would receive anything and look what happened, over
$3,000 in scholarships. I am very thankful that I put forth
a little effort and applied, it was worth it."
