CFA declares Teach-in
success

The teach-in held
on the Cal State Long Beach campus Wednesday was declared
a "great success" by Bill Johnson, vice president
for the California Faculty Association at the Academic Senate
meeting Thursday.
In response to Chairman Wayne Dick's request for a report
on the teach-in, Johnson said the event was "well attended,
fun and very informative. Everybody conducted themselves quite
well. From a CFA standpoint it was a great success."
A quiet settled over the senate after the announcement.
CSULB President Robert Maxson announced during his report
that several members from an accreditation team are coming
to campus Nov. 26 for a one-day getting acquainted time The
team will make a more formal visit in February.
"The chair and a representative from the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges will be meeting with the people on
our campus that they will be working with in February,"
Maxson said. "This will help the formal accreditation
process go smoothly later on."
The senate also heard the first reading of a proposed revision
to a university policy statement regarding range elevation
for lecturers.
The proposal asks for quicker pay raises for new professors.
Currently, professors receive increases after so much time
at the university.
"Many lecturers come here right after receiving their
master's degrees," said Eileen Klink, chair of the English
department. "They are placed into Category A and don't
move for sometimes 10 years. This policy revision gives a
formal process to recognize those deserving lecturers."
The senate also approved a name change to the Department of
Comparative Literature and Classics, as well as a change to
the degree that students earn upon graduating in that department.
The name of the department was changed to the Department of
Comparative World Literature and Classics. The senate voted
to waive the first reading of the item and the name was changed
with unanimous consent.
The next Academic Senate meeting is Thursday Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
in the Towner Auditorium.
