By Jeanne Hoffa

There are 15 athletic
and academic committees looking for students to fill advisory
positions by the end of the month. Any Cal State Long Beach
student may apply.
Following is a
list of available positions.
Committee on Athletics:
Members deal with athletic policy ? everything from budgeting
to coach selection.
NCAA Certification
Committee: Ensures all athletic participants follow NCAA standards:
makes sure players keep their grades up, looks for evidence
of hidden slush funds, sees that women get equal representation,
etc. It is a two-year commitment, so sophomores or juniors
preferred.
Teacher Preparation
Committee: Examines policy governing teacher preparation and
credential programs.
Grade Appeals Committee:
Oversees arguments between students and faculty on grade disputes.
Academic Integrity
Committee: Deals with requests of students accused of cheating
or plagiarism. Meets very rarely.
University Organization
and Services Committee: Members advise on issues of physical
planning and facilities management; also health and safety
conditions, as well as traffic and parking matters.
Academic Computing
Services Advisory Committee: Advises computing services decisions
on campus.
Campus Climate
Committee: Evaluates the campus environment from the minority
and cross-cultural viewpoint. Reports to the president on
Affirmative Action Plan compliance.
Educational Resources
Committee: Helps ensure the maintenance of the library collection
and learning resources.
Student Affairs
Committee: Recommends policy for student services: housing,
health services, food services, career planning, counseling,
discipline, and on and on. This large committee needs
six students.
Financial Affairs
Council: Recommends policy on fiscal and business matters,
including the entire instructional budget, the athletic funds,
individual programs and even the allocation of faculty positions.
Planning &
Educational Policies Council: Evaluates curriculum, academic
programs and standards.
Assessment Committee:
Stimulate campus assessment activities, such as student development
and higher education.
Graduate Council:
Reviews all graduate programs, recommends new ones, and checks
on the effectiveness of the existing ones. Applicants must
be grad students.
Academic Senate:
Supervises all other committees.
Any interested
student may contact Linda Sherwood at 985-8672 or go to the
