Owner seeks justice, not war

By Kimberly Pasquis
On-line Forty-Niner

Marie Deary began to see the paranoia from the effects of Sept. 11 come out in her customers.

As owner of the 2000+ Bookstore, located at 309 Pine Ave. in downtown Long Beach, Deary decided to take an active role in educating the Long Beach community by coordinating a lecture series titled "Justice Not War."

"People are paranoid because they don't know," Deary said. "I wanted people to be able to talk about it and not be afraid."

After the tragedy, Deary started asking her customers to make suggestions for people they would be interested to see speak and topics of discussion.

Deary chose professors to speak because of their influence on students and because they have been studying and Middle Eastern affairs and foreign policy for years.

"These people did not wake up on Sept. 11 and become experts," Deary said.

The first installment will begin on Thursday at 7 p.m., featuring Stephen Zunes, associate professor of politics from the University of San Francisco. Zunes will speak on the "10 Things to Know about the Middle East." His focus will be on the foundations of anti-American terrorism and how the United States can best prevent future attacks.

Zunes said he believes that people's sudden interest in foreign policy is welcome but long overdue.

"Sept. 11 proved that we cannot pretend that the reaction to U.S. policies overseas will not come back to haunt us," Zunes said.

"If the U.S. puts more emphasis on human rights, international law and sustainable development and less attention on arms transfers, air strikes and punitive sanctions we would be a lot safer," he said.

Future topics include "Understanding Afghanistan" and "10 Things about U.S. television representation of the Middle East."

Speakers are planned for the next seven weeks on different days of the week to facilitate the community member's busy schedules. For more information, go to the 2000+ Bookstore Web site at www.edunow.com.
