Reservists keep
status

Cal State Long
Beach supports its students who are called for military service
during the school term as a result of the terrorist attacks
on Sept. 11.
Under the California
State University's policy, students do not lose registration
priority, academic credit, fees, or degree status while on
duty.
"This is a
very reasonable and good policy for students," said Colleen
Bentley-Adler, director of public affairs for the CSU. "They
can work for the country and then, they are allowed to come
back to school after the duty as they used to be without any
concern."
CSU campuses are
prepared to cooperate with students who get called for military
service, Bentley-Adler said. The campuses are flexible in
the coordination of withdrawal and the possibility of re-enrollment
after the students return from military responsibilities.
If a student is
called to military duty, the campuses have the ability to
authorize a leave of absence, making sure a student is not
required to reapply for admission in subsequent terms.
Furthermore, the
withdrawal from courses without restriction or penalty may
also be approved for such students. A full refund of tuition
fees will also be provided for students.
Excluded from this
provision are non-resident tuition and parking fees.
However, financial
aid in an amount equal to the non-refundable portion of nonresident
fees may be given by presidents.
Bentley-Adler said
these provisions have existed for a long time, but the treasurers
and chancellors recently added financial aid for nonresident
fees, after the recent terrorist attacks.
Finally, those
who have federal educational loans, such as students and other
reservists, will not be expected to make payments while on
active duty.
This policy covers
all 23 CSU campuses and six off-campus centers.
"[Students]
should be entitled to return to school, as Cal State University
provides, after serving for the country," said Andre
Kim, a CSULB student majoring in business.
"Knowing the
existence of this provision makes me think about our recent
problems and it makes me feel that we are really in a serious
position," Kim added.
