Cultivating the Long Beach community

By Dwight Flenniken III
On-line Forty-Niner

The doctor who visits elderly patients at home for free out of kindness.

A local woman who gives back to the community where she was raised. An alumnus dedicating service to her alma mater.

In short this is Dr. Nancy Kimber.

"Nancy is someone whose success and compassion epitomizes what our alumni are," said CSULB Alumni Executive Director Gay Arakawa.

Kimber was born and raised in Long Beach. She graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 1990, earning her bachelor's degree in microbiology.

"I think [Cal State Long Beach] prepared me well for what I encountered in medical school," Kimber said. "It was nice because it was home."

She left Long Beach to attend the University of Health Sciences at Chicago Medical School.

There she completed her doctorate work in 1994, finishing 19th of 170 students in her class.

As of December 2000, Kimber has been board certified, specializing in gynecology.

On top of a busy doctor's schedule she still makes room for her first love: giving back.

Kimber volunteers with For the Child, where she serves as vice president. For the Child gives support to sexually abused children.

Other organizations she serves with include the Su Casa Foundation and Big Sisters of Los Angeles. She also sits on the board of directors for the Long Beach Library Foundation.

Children's charities are a major part of her volunteer work, as well as her medical life. She has a special interest in adolescent gynecology and teen pregnancy.

Her recent interest has steered her toward police work. Some of her time is spent as a Sexual Assault Consultant for the Long Beach Police Department. There she gives counseling and physical exams to rape victims.

"I just graduated from the reserve police academy," Kimber said. "I am very interested in forensics."

Volunteering seems to run in the family.

"I became exposed to community service because of my mother," Kimber said.

Her mother, Diane Jacobes, is very active politically and voluntarily in the Long Beach community.

Kimber won the Long Beach State Alumni Volunteer of the Year award earlier this month.
