Students and employers
took care of business Wednesday at the Fall 2001 Job Fair.
Hundreds of students and alumni were on the hunt and more
than 180 companies were on hand to offer their services.
Employers were very pleased with the number of students who
attended the fair, according to Ed Morton, director of the
Career Development Center. Some students were trying to make
a good first impression, wearing suits and ties to get that
extra edge.
"People should know that all majors are represented today,"
Morton said. "It's not just business and engineering
majors that are here."
The Job Fair was divided into sections according to majors
to help students find employers with greater ease. Employers
seeking business and engineering majors took up most of the
University Student Union floor with over 70 booths. Their
representatives recruited employees and took resumes.
Some major companies such as Pepsi, the Boeing Co. and Dreamworks
were running busy booths, as well as many government agencies
such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
In the wake of a new war, the United States Army, and Navy
were recruiting students heavily as well.
The Long Beach Unified School District also had a bustling
booth.
"It's great to be here," said Kari Kuroiwa, an LBUSD
credential services specialist. "It's my first time here
and I am running out of materials."
Sophomore Avianta Robertson, a broadcast journalism major,
said she was extremely happy with the Job Fair.
"I am just trying to get my feet wet," Robertson
said. "I am impressed with the turnout. I came to just
check it out and I ended up applying for an internship for
ABC-7."
Alumna Tymeshia Beeks, a political science graduate was also
pleased with this year's fair.
"This is the only Job Fair I've been to with lots of
counseling jobs," Beeks said. "Everyone's handing
out applications and taking resumes. It really feels like
they're here to hire."
The CDC will hold one more fair in the spring for students
who missed it this time around.
