Charitable walk commemorates anniversary

By Tom Carey
On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach students have been talking the talk, but now they are actually walking the walk to honor the victims of Sept.11.

The CSULB President's Ambassadors are sponsoring the 49er Walk for America fundraiser Thursday to commemorate the one-month anniversary of the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.

The ambassadors are a select group of juniors and seniors picked to exemplify the school and serve as liaisons between the university and the community.

They are asking students to contribute a minimum five-dollar donation that will benefit the New York Firefighters 9-11 Relief Fund.

"We want to show people that students here care," said senior Valerie Ioriatti, a business administration major and co-coordinator of the event.

With a donation, students will receive a pin to wear, a raffle ticket and a free lunch. Raffles for CSULB sweatshirts and other prizes will take place every 30 minutes.

The walk starts at 1 p.m. at the College of Business Administration building and ends at The Nugget, where participating students will be treated to a free barbecue.

According to Ioriatti, the walk will take only 15 minutes and participation is voluntary.

"There will be a designated path that students and ambassadors will follow and there will be people cheerleading you on as you walk by," said Richie Cruz, assistant coordinator for the President's Ambassadors.

Major television stations are scheduled to cover the event in an effort to show that CSULB is doing its part to help in relief efforts.

By participating, students will have a chance to show their support and be recognized.

"Someone is going to be there to video and sell a short one to two minute clip to the news stations," Ioriatti said.

The President's Ambassadors are hoping to have a big turnout despite such short notice of the event.

"We have sent out fliers to every department and to the mayor of Long Beach," Cruz said. "We've made 2,500 pins to pass out to the participants and we've had a good response from everyone we've contacted."

For more information about the walk, contact the President's Ambassadors at (562) 985-4121.
