Terrorism prompts
need for teach-ins

On what began as
an ordinary day in September, the skyline over New York City
exploded in the worst act of terrorism this country has ever
experienced. The terrorists were people with an ideology few
Americans could comprehend.
In an effort to
shed light on the events that led up to this tragedy, faculty
and students from the College of Liberal Arts have organized
a series of teach-ins, "Understanding Sept. 11."
The first of this series begins Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the
Speaker's Platform.
The teach-in will
consist of a group of presentations designed to enlighten
people about Islam and Afghanistan, as well as the psychology
of hate and the reasons why some resort to terrorism.
Speakers will attempt to dispel any confusion or misconceptions
that anyone may have toward the Afghans or the Islamic world.
Topics will include
globalization, U.S. foreign policy in Asia, and the role of
America in Afghanistan. Following these presentations
will be a discussion about student activism and what people
are willing to sacrifice in order to maintain our country's
freedom without sacrificing too many of our civil liberties.
The event will conclude
with the distribution of a questionnaire, seeking suggestions
for the next teach-in, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29.
