On-campus volunteer
groups gather money

Campus organizations
are becoming proactive to reach out to the World Trade Center
victims by organizing relief efforts to donate money.
Associated Students Inc. will host a fund raiser next week
for the children affected by the tragedy. Jars will be distributed
around campus to collect money from students that want to
donate to the relief efforts.
According to Gina Garcia, community service commissioner for
A.S.I., the jars will be placed in the dorms, the University
Student Union food locations, the University Dining Plaza,
the University Bookstore and convenience store, the University
Library, the Alumni Relations office, the Outpost, the Beach
Pride office and the A.S.I. office.
The money will be collected each day and at the end of the
week the money will be given to the national Kiwanis Club,
to ensure the donation finds the right place.
"We are hoping to raise at least $30,000," Garcia
said. "Anyone who would like to make large donations
can come to the A.S. office and make a check out to the Kiwanis
Club."
Circle K, a service group on campus, is helping sponsor the
event. President Linda Camacho said that they are also considering
donating the money from their annual bowl-a-thon to relief
efforts. The money from that event normally goes to pediatric
aid, however, with the recent tragedies Circle K is re-evaluating
with the Kiwanis Club on how the money will be distributed.
The community service group in the residence halls will also
be collecting money next week during dinner in the dining
halls.
"The money that we collect in four days will be donated
to the American Red Cross," said Anne Salabaj, president
of the community service group. "We want to collect
as much money as possible."
Also to help relief efforts, A.S.I. will hold their annual
blood drive Nov. 6 to 8 in the University Student Union Ballroom.
Other possible locations to give blood will be in the library
and on lower campus. Garcia mentioned a possibility that A.S.I.
will host a blood drive once a month, thereafter.
"We hope that this will unite the campus and the students,"
Garcia said. "Being such a large university we should
be able to set an example."
