Monologues choose
CSULB for reactions

Cal State Long
Beach was chosen to be one of three universities from around
the country to host the Regional Empowerment Workshop, led
by author of "The Vagina Monologues" Eve Ensler
and the V-Day Organization.
The event is hosted
by alumna Laura Marchant and the loud*R*mouth Theatre Company
who annually performs the production of "The Vagina Monologues"
in honor of V-Day.
V-Day is a day
dedicated to the awareness of violence against women and girls.
Creative events to increase education and raising money for
organizations are all part of the struggle to generate broader
attention to stop worldwide violence.
The workshop involves
30 CSULB students and alumni that were invited from offices
and programs on campus, such as the Women's Resource Center,
Alumni Relations and the women's studies department, Marchant
said. Students from other universities around the country
will also be in attendance.
"Cal State
Long Beach was chosen over USC and UCLA. We feel very
blessed to have the workshop take place here," Marchant
said.
CSULB was probably
chosen due to the working relationship between Marchant and
the V-Day organization.
Ensler will be
discussing student's reactions, how to deal with student's
reactions and how to publicize future events of "The
Vagina Monologues." The purpose of the workshop is to
empower women to be active on campus and put an end to sexual
violence, Marchant said.
"In the 60s
and 70s Cal State Long Beach had rallies every week because
students fought for causes they were passionate about,"
Marchant said. "That is why we have health services on
campus. We want the students to become active in this cause."
"[Ensler]
is coming to tell students that they have a voice and to be
active and let them know that they can make a difference."
