Joe Jost's giving a jolly time for charity

By Tom Carey
On-line Forty-Niner

Joe Jost's is giving everyone a reason to throw a cold one back in the name of charity this weekend. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Long Beach's oldest bar will be donating all proceeds in honor of the attacks on America.

The money earned during the day, including all gratuities, will be donated to the American Red Cross Victim's Children's Fund to help families in need in New York and Washington, D.C.

"The owner, Ken Buck, and the employees thought it would be a good way to help out," said Shawn Flathers, manager at Joe Jost's.

Celebrities, athletes and companies are donating money left and right to help our less fortunate neighbors on the East Coast. Joe Jost's hopes other establishments around Long Beach will follow suit, Flathers said.

Joe Jost's hopes to draw a larger than normal crowd, according to Flathers. "We hope to make between $3 to 6,000 Sunday."

The bar brings in its large crowds because of the "Special" and the pickled eggs. The "Special," which is a polish sausage with a slice of swiss cheese and a pickle on rye bread, is a crowd favorite at Joe Jost's. The pickled eggs are also unique, being served on a mound of pretzels with chili peppers.

"It's all about the 'Specials', eggs and beer," said Jost's enthusiast, patron George Sagen, 26 of Cypress. "It's the great sense of tradition that keeps people coming back."

Weddings and many other special events have been held at Jost's due to the notoriety gained over the years.

For those who aren't beer drinkers, Jost's has several pool tables and televisions to watch your favorite sporting event.

Joe Jost's is located at 2803 E. Anaheim St. in Long Beach, where it has thrived since 1924. For more information, call (562) 439-5446.
