Virtual
job searches

The Career Development Center is going virtual thanks to
Edward Morton, the new director of the CDC. Morton plans to
take the center beyond its physical boundaries with an online
approach.
The CDC is looking to take its resources to the Internet this
year to maximize the number of students it can reach.
"We are trying to expand the CDC beyond its physical
environment," Morton said. "We are hoping to have
virtual career fairs, career chat rooms, and digital streaming
of workshops to your computers."
By late spring the CDC hopes to have all of its resources
online, Morton said. Job databases will be available online
at the center's Web site.
"We will be able to download on a weekly basis hot jobs,
part-time jobs, full-time jobs, internships as well as tips
on how to do resumes," Morton said.
The CDC current Web site is located at www.careers.csulb.edu,
where students can give their e-mail addresses to receive
any important information regarding their career aspirations.
A large number of students visit the CDC each day and if the
volume grows a virtual career center would be able to handle
the flow.
"Morton has only been here for a month and we don't anticipate
any immediate changes," said Robin Lee, coordinator of
the co-op education program.
But Morton's plans for the near future will have an impact
felt by many students.
Morton stressed the need for student's personal e-mail addresses
to turn the program into a virtual one.
Morton also stressed the significance of students obtaining
internships prior to graduation.
"Internships are incredibly important. More and more
companies are using internships as part of the application
process," Morton explained.
Morton attended several colleges before landing at CSULB.
Morton got his bachelor's degree at Westmont College in Santa
Barbara before moving on to Cal State Fullerton, where he
got his master's degree. He then continued his education at
the University of Mississippi, where he earned his doctorate.
Morton originally wanted to teach history in order to "help
students see how people have dealt with issues and problems
on a broad spectrum," he said. "My particular field
is in the area of student personnel."
He said he loves to work with college-aged students to assist
them at their point in their life to make a lot of life decisions,
so the CDC is ideal.
Morton also coordinated more advertising of CDC events
on campus.
"Every Friday we will be posting hot jobs and career
tips fliers on every bulletin board in the school," said
Morton.
The next CDC event is a resume writing workshop held at 12:30
today in the CDC in Brotman Hall.
