Cal State Long
Beach President Robert Maxson praised the students, faculty
and staff of CSULB for their cool and calm response to the
events of last Tuesday in his address at the first Academic
Senate meeting of the semester Thursday.
He said at the
2 p.m. meeting that although Tuesdays are the busiest days
at CSULB, everyone worked together to make the evacuation
process a smooth and safe one.
"Last Tuesday
I saw young people supporting one another," Maxson said.
"Nobody panicked, and there were no inappropriate behaviors.
Students understood that what happened that day was different
than anything they'd ever experienced in their lives."
The president will
give a more statistical report at the next Senate meeting,
but said he wanted to take the time on Thursday to thank the
campus community for its cooperation.
Later in the meeting
Sen. Mark Wiley was elected to the Executive Committee as
a member-at-large. A vacancy on the committee was created
last semester when Sen. Dot Goldish was appointed to Dean
of Undergraduate Studies.
Members of the
Senate also heard a first reading of a proposed change to
a section of the campus withdrawal policy. Senators discussed
changes in wording and other issues surrounding the policy
and will take action at the next meeting.
The Academic Senate
Retreat will take place Friday Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Long Beach Marriott Hotel on the corner of Lakewood
and Spring Streets.
"The theme
of this year's retreat is rethinking the culture and politics
of teaching and learning," said Chairman Wayne Dick.
"We will discuss faculty roles in the university and
ways to give our students a positive learning experience."
The next Academic
Senate meeting is Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Towner Auditorium
in PSY 150.
