Center covers medical needs

By Lisa Huynh
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

Located on State University Drive and Merriam Way, the Student Health Center provides basic medical services and preventive health awareness programs at an inexpensive price to registered students.

With a full staff, the center provides basic medical services including both women's and men's health, laboratory testing, a pharmacy, X-rays and immediate medical care.

The center also has preventive health programs providing sexually transmitted disease testing, flu vaccines, tuberculosis skin testing and travel immunization.

"I stress to all students that they must show proof of immunity or get immunized for measles and rubella before registration," said Lee Eames, Health Services office supervisor.

Eames added that there is a small fee of $35 that is paid with tuition prior to registration. During the summer, there is a fee of $4 for continuing students and $15 for non-continuing students. Other fees include prescription medication, sexually transmitted disease testing, X-rays and immunization.

Appointments are required for physicals and yearly examinations, such as pap smears and contraceptives. It is strongly recommended to schedule appointments for basic medical care because the waiting period can last anywhere from one to three hours. The center is at its busiest times on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, according to Eames.

"The Student Health Center is a great place because it offers many services to students," said Tyler Nguyen, a liberal studies major. "When I'm not feeling too well, I just go there and get things taken care of."

The Health Resource Center, a separate division within the Student Health Center, provides education on how to live a healthy lifestyle. Some of the programs include nutrition counseling, HIV testing, sexual health awareness workshops and alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention workshops.

"The alcohol, tobacco and other drugs program is a new program developed to deal with issues of substance abuse among college students," Eames said.

The Student Heath Center and Health Resource Center is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, one may call 562) 985-4771.
