Various campus
jobs available
By Holli Kolkey

Alicia Young, 19,
of Temecula will be a freshman this fall at California State
Long Beach. Not only will Young enter a new environment, she
will also be looking for a job.
Carol Brown-Elston,
a career counselor at the Career Development Center, can help
-- Elston is one of many counselors that staff the center,
available to aid students in search for on-and-off campus
employment.
For those in search
of on-campus employment, CSULB offers many opportunities,
Elston said. Job opportunities are categorized by three levels
grouped by the student's skill level, according to the Career
Development Center catalog.
Student employees
can be paid as much as $10.25 an hour for working as a technician
in a computer lab, a typist in a department office or manager
in a campus store, Elston said.
Those interested
in an entry-level job at the Bookstore can expect to be paid
anywhere from $6.25 to $8.25, said Fred Neely, director of
the Bookstore.
But don't fret,
working for the bookstore is not without its perks.
"Students
receive 15 percent off textbooks and 20 percent off merchandise
like school sweatshirts and school supplies," Neely said.
If working in the
Bookstore is not appealing, working at any of the many snack
shops is also a possibility. Students can also apply to a
department such as the history department to work as a secretary,
student aid, or assistant, Elston said.
Jobs are available
on a part-time and full-time basis year around to all students
taking at least six units, Elston said.
Students interested
working for CSULB, ranging from janitorial to administration,
can contact the Human Resources department. If on financial
aid, the student can enroll in the work-studies program and
apply part of their job earnings to tuition, Elston said.
The Career Development
Center offers a search for on-campus jobs on their Web site
at careers.csulb.edu. Interested students can also make an
appointment with one of the center's career counselors.
"We'll sit
down with the students one-on-one and go through the on-campus
job binder to find a job that suits the individual,"
Elston said. "We are willing to go the extra mile."
