Taming the hunger
beast on campus
By Vanessa Schleider

Students with rumbling
stomachs can satisfy their hunger at a variety of places around
campus.
Veronica Behunin,
20, a junior at Cal State Long Beach, said there are good
and bad places to eat, one just needs to know where to go.
"After a full
day of classes my favorite place to eat is at Culinary Wraps
right next to The Nugget," Behunin said. "I love
the grilled chicken wrap when ordered with no cheese and extra
lettuce."
Behunin thought
back to her freshman year.
"I remember
being really hungry the first couple of weeks because I didn't
know where all the food was," Behunin said. "Then
I found out that most of the good stuff was in the building
on your right as soon as you get off the escalators, and I
went hungry no more."
Located behind
Culinary Wraps is the much-loved Nugget. Here students can
enjoy a game of pool or watch the latest sporting event on
the big screen TV with friends. The Nugget serves breakfast,
lunch, and dinner, and sells beer.
"This is the
best place to go when you're done with finals and want to
relax and unwind," Behunin said.
Next to Culinary
Wraps is the University Dining Plaza. This is where Behunin
visited when she was hungry her freshman year. Here students
can find many popular restaurants including Taco Bell Express,
Chick Fil A, and Panda Express.
Also located in
the Dining Plaza are Tomassito's italian food, Le-Bakery,
Boar's Head Deli, Krispy Kreme, a smoothie bar, an ice cream
stand, and the newest addition, Starbucks Coffee.
Christie Myvett,
administrative assistant for the Dining Plaza, mentioned the
Chart Room, a restaurant that not many students are aware
of located behind the Dining Plaza.
"Although
faculty is the majority population of the Chart Room, it offers
a full buffet and students are more than welcome," Myvett
said.
Now that Behunin
has become accustomed to the eating facilities at CSULB, she
has developed a steady routine.
"I like to
start my mornings with a coffee from Starbucks and a donut
from Krispy Kreme, by afternoon I love the pasta with meat
sauce from Tomassito's," Behunin said. "It's nice
to be away from home and still be able to eat real food."
The Dining Plaza
is not the only place to find food. Located on the second
floor of the University Student Union are Subway, Carl's Jr.,
El Pollo Loco and Foster's Freeze. Across the courtyard
of the Union are the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Robek's
Juice. If short on cash, the restaurants in the USU accept
both credit cards and ATM cards.
Scattered around
campus, there are food carts featuring hot dogs, pretzels,
pastries, coffee, beverages and sandwiches. If students are
ever at the University Library and get the munchies, the Beach
Hut Café is located directly outside.
For those students
living in the dorms, the already paid for food is not too
appetizing, according to Behunin.
"I can't think
of a time that any of the food looked appealing to me,"
Behunin said. "We used to beg someone to make a Jack-in-the-Box
run at midnight because we were all starving from not eating
the food. But if you must eat in the dorms, the grilled cheese
is pretty tasty."
Whether settling
for cereal for dinner in the dorms or getting the always-dependable
Panda bowl at Panda Express, there are a plethora of choices
to please hungry students.
