Path to campus
through Events Office
By Leah Bleiweis
Special for the Daily Forty-Niner
Cal State Long
Beach campus has hosted the Special Olympics for the past
three years using several of its facilities.
The Special Olympics
is one of several events handled by the campus special events
office. Val LiHang, the coordinator of the Campus Events Office,
is the contact for the Special Olympics, for weddings in the
Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden and for Hollywood production
companies interested in filming at CSULB.
The name Campus
Events Office, however, seems to be misleading. The name implies
that the office would supply lists of events and seminars
for the semester. But, the office acts as the primary liaison
between outside vendors and venue managers, according to Lihang.
She takes care
of parking, safety services and police presence LiHang said.
This procedure acts as a review to accept events as well as
providing a management structure to coordinate the events.
LiHang gets all initial calls from outside vendors and helps
them through planning and executing their event.
The Campus Events
Office was established in 1997 by CSULB President Robert Maxson
through the Facilities Use Policy. It was created to help
manage and schedule off-campus vendor events, in compliance
with university policy said LiHang.
The Campus Events
Office is filled with all the information needed to use all
the facilities of the campus to their fullest capabilities.
This helps LiHang direct all event questions to the proper
offices and facilities on campus and aid in the success of
much larger events. LiHang also helps the campus prioritize
scheduling to give instructional space precedence over all
other events, avoiding displacement from rooms and parking.
Her office is a
"great first stop," LiHang said, to find out how
to schedule an event on campus.
