Academic advising
eases schedule woes
By Amber Wenzel
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner
The Academic Advising
center provides general education advising for continuing
students, total academic program planning for entering and
continuing students and is a home base to undeclared students.
Faculty advisers
are available by appointment to assist undergraduate students
with what lower division and upper division requirements are
necessary for their majors.
Advisers also offer
academic advisement and information about certificates, minors,
master programs and internships. Lists of faculty advisers
and how to locate them are listed in the schedule of classes.
"Appointments
are appreciated," said Suzanne Wurzer, assistant director
for the Academic Advising center. "Since the fall semester
is the busiest time of the year, two weeks in advance is especially
helpful.
Freshmen and new
undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in the
Student Orientation Advising Registration workshop, or SOAR,
before visiting the center. SOAR introduces students to the
CSULB campus and recommends needed classes.
As a transfer student
from El Camino Community College, 22-year-old Morgan Walker
was not sure if his associate arts degree would allow him
to be general education certified. Walker said he got the
answers he needed from his academic advising appointment.
"I am really
glad I made the appointment to see the adviser," Walker
said. "The Academic Advising center is a free service
for students. Who wouldn't want to take advantage of
it?"
The Academic Advising
Center is located in Library East, Room 125.
The center is open
Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m.
to 5 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Evening appointments
are available. Call 985-4837 for more information.
