Radio stations tune into jingle bell rock

By Greg Smith
On-line Forty-Niner

The holiday season is a time for giving and this season radio stations are giving their fans concert spectaculars featuring the hottest musical performers of the moment. Los Angeles-based stations 106.7 KROQ, 102.7 KIIS and Star 98.7 are each staging massive concerts showcasing their respective style of acts.

The biggest bill is the 12th annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas, a two-night event featuring the current kings of hard rock. The concert runs Dec. 8 and 9 at the Universal Amphitheater.

Night one features much harder acts with punk bands Bad Religion, Blink 182 and Sum 41. The night also includes Alien Ant Farm, P.O.D., Puddle of Mud, System of a Down and co-headliners Linkin Park and Staind.

Night two features relatively softer acts in addition to the hard-edged headliners including Bush, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Nickelback, Remy Zero, 311 and Pete Yorn.

KIIS FM is throwing a more eclectic party on Dec. 19 at the Staples Center with their "Jingle Ball." The night features Latin rock sensation Shakira, R&B singers Alicia Keys and Craig David and a mix of teen rock and pop with Lifehouse, Five For Fighting, Michelle Branch, L.F.O., Toya and Sugar Ray.

Star 98.7 is throwing a smaller event on Dec. 13 at the Shrine Auditorium featuring acts that some listeners may have forgotten about. "Not So Silent Night" includes Alanis Morisette, Garbage, Nelly Furtado and Better than Ezra.
