Student films:
the reel deal
By Jeanne Hoffa
On-line Forty-Niner
Murder, bank heists,
true love, drugs and car chases; you can see them all at Cal
State Long Beach's student filmmaker's showcase at the University
Theatre Saturday at 8 p.m.
The new 16mm films are the creations of eight senior production
majors who work in teams on each other's films, treading positions
as cameramen, gaffers, grips, sound mixers, boom operators
and assistant directors.
Three CSULB film students won top awards at November's CSU
summer Arts Festival. Dan Berman won best narrative film for
"Dial F", Aaron Garcia won best experimental film
for "Drowning" and Ken Winkler won top honors for
his music video, "Heaven". The three films were
finalists out of 139 entries.
Lee Williams "Trade Day" has won 23 film festival
awards since last may, and is being submitted for an Academy
Award for best short film.
Tickets for the newly completed films are $6 for students
and $8 for regular admission.
