Student films: the reel deal

By Jeanne Hoffa
On-line Forty-Niner

Murder, bank heists, true love, drugs and car chases; you can see them all at Cal State Long Beach's student filmmaker's showcase at the University Theatre Saturday at 8 p.m.

The new 16mm films are the creations of eight senior production majors who work in teams on each other's films, treading positions as cameramen, gaffers, grips, sound mixers, boom operators and assistant directors.

Three CSULB film students won top awards at November's CSU summer Arts Festival. Dan Berman won best narrative film for "Dial F", Aaron Garcia won best experimental film for "Drowning" and Ken Winkler won top honors for his music video, "Heaven". The three films were finalists out of 139 entries.

Lee Williams "Trade Day" has won 23 film festival awards since last may, and is being submitted for an Academy Award for best short film.

Tickets for the newly completed films are $6 for students and $8 for regular admission.

The film and electronic arts department provided the following showcase film descriptions:

"Butterfly," An action adventure film written and directed by Fernaz Samiinia. A young single mother must flee town with a bag full of money when an unscrupulous boss has murder on his mind. (10 minutes)

"A Long Road to Travel," written and directed by Markus Davids. A Russian immigrant is torn between survival in the United States, and serving a court summons to a fellow Russian immigrant suspected of murder. (13 minutes.)

"Half a Pact," written and directed by Erik Fetler. A teenage boy's decision may decide the fate of those in his life. (Nine minutes.)

"Retread," written and directed by David Thorton. A student returns to his hometown to close an unfinished chapter in his life and has to choose between helping his drug addicted girlfriend or his career. (16 minutes.)

"A New Day Sun," written and directed by Todd Kniss. A teenage boy's decision may decide the fate of those in his life.

"Joe's Tavern," written and directed by Melissa Givens. Joe's world is thrust into questions when an outsider enters, and offers redemption before all is lost.

"When the Morning Comes," written and directed by Kendra C. Keel. A young woman struggles with pain and loneliness as she crossed from self-medication into addiction. (11 minutes.)

"Closing Thoughts," written and directed by Wendy Moore. Following the death of one of their own, a group of former high school friends find that time doesn't necessarily heal old wounds. (16 minutes.)
