Grooving into the holidays

By Joe Licavoli
Special to On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach grooved into the Christmas spirit when Kappa Psi Epsilon and the Pilipino American Coalition hosted the fifth annual Christmasfest last Saturday.

Different vendors sold Filipino food and merchandise as entertainment acts performed at the grass area of Friendship Walk. The mood of the festival was very positive, thanks to the great host and the excited crowd.

The festivities began with the national anthem, which seemed appropriate with the abroad soldiers who will not have the chance of being with their families this holiday season. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was followed by the Phillippines' national anthem, in which the Filipino community proudly displayed their heritage.

Diverse and eclectic music filled the cool air, ranging from ska and reggae to hip-hop and jazz.

The hip-hop group A.R.T. from Long Beach put on an exciting and energetic performance. The band had a positive message that showed through the great interaction with the audience. They blasted through their innovative songs, such as the inspirational "Ghetto Blues" and the high-energy "A.R.T.-Majors."

Some of the highlights of the performances were the quick rhymes, smooth vocal harmonies and A.R.T.'s only female soulful background music. Unfortunately, their 15-minute set was a short tease for their potential in rocking the crowd.

The group is working on a album that should be in stores sometime in 2002, so definitely keep your eyes and ears out for that, as well as their local shows.

Simple Citizens, from the Palmdale and Lancaster area, also performed a great show. Members of PAC and Kappa Psi Epsilon also performed acapella acts and dance numbers to entertain the crowd roughly the size of a large classroom.

Overall, Christmasfest 2001 was a success in which an ethnically-diverse crowd was able to enjoy good tunes and good vibes during the eight-hour day.
