Cal Rep to open
'O. Henry'
By Marten Lewerth

The spirit of the
holiday season will come to life on stage this Friday as the
California Repertory Company begins its annual offering of
"An O. Henry Christmas" at the Edison Theatre.
The play was written by Cal Rep's producing director Howard
Burman and celebrates the nobility of the human spirit.
"It's a wonderful, traditional Christmas story without
being overly religious," said first-time Cal Rep director
Mark Staley, who is in the MFA program at Cal State Long Beach.
"It's a story of about six homeless people and a man
who visits them," Staley added. "In exchange for
food and comfort at Christmas, he tells them stories."
As written by Burman, the show is based on several of O' Henry's
short stories including "The Gift of the Magi,"
"Two Thanksgiving Gentlemen" and "The Last
Leaf." Events from the life of William Sydney Porter
-- the man behind the O. Henry pseudonym -- are also incorporated.
Staley added that the rehearsal process has been relatively
short.
"We've only had about five solid days of rehearsal,"
he said. "So there has been a lot of improvisation and
adaptability, but it's a great experience and all the actors
are excellent."
"An O. Henry Christmas" opens Friday at the Edison
Theatre, located at 213 Broadway in downtown Long Beach. For
