Ghoulish tunes
haunt hall

String-strumming
wizards, percussion-pounding witches and brass-blowing goblins
filled the stage at the Daniel Recital Hall Tuesday during
the Cal State Long Beach Symphony Orchestra's fifth annual
Halloween concert at 5:30 p.m.
Fake dust flew off Conductor Richard Rintoul's dead-man costume
as he led the orchestra through three of the five pieces performed,
including "Trick-or-Treat in the Twilight Zone,"
Cinderella's Waltz and Midnight and The Ride of the Valkyries.
"I was very pleased with the way the students performed,"
Rintoul said. "These concerts are a lot of fun because
they bring people out to hear our music that would normally
not come. I think the kids in the audience enjoyed it, too."
"Trick-or-Treat in the Twilight Zone" was a favorite
with the audience, because it included theme songs from popular
TV shows and movies such as "The Twilight Zone,"
"Psycho," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Bewitched."
Master of ceremonies Leland Vail dressed as a vampire and
narrated each piece in a thick Transylvanian accent.
Graduate student Randall Brinton, dressed as a 15th century
gentleman, conducted "In the House of the Devil"
by Luigi Boccherini. Graduate student Joseph Massaro, clad
in a red-satin wizard costume complete with sorcerer's hat,
conducted "Dance Macabre, Op. 40" by Camille Saint-Saens.
Following the concert was a completely free Halloween carnival
directly in front of the recital hall. Audience and orchestra
members alike enjoyed a "boo-fet" of food provided
by the Spagettini Cucina and Palo Verde Corner. Games such
as a ping-pong ball toss, a bean-bag toss, fishing for candy
and a wheel of prizes were provided for children and their
parents. A caricaturist and a face-painter entertained kids
for free.
"My daughter Sopia loved the concert," said audience
member Laurel Perry of Long Beach. "She asked to get
all dressed up and was very excited about the carnival to
follow. I think it's a great way to spend Halloween with your
family."
