Belly dancers
to shake up ballroom
By Jeanne Hoffa
On-line Forty-Niner
Among the great
Turkish cultural contributions to society, we have tobacco,
coffee, baths, and of course, belly dancers.
Not ones to keep all good things to themselves, the members
of the Turkish Student's Association are inviting the campus
to a shin-dig Saturday, featuring belly dancers, live music,
Turkish food and prizes in the University Student Union Ballroom
from 7 to 11 p.m.
"We want to share the Turkish culture with Cal State
Long Beach and America," said TSA President Yanus Aksoy.
CSULB has 75 Turkish students.
While the party is intended for students to have fun and share
Turkish culture with fellow international students, the event
has turned into a community outreach vehicle.
Immediately after Sept. 11, the Turkish Consulate in Washington
contacted Aksoy to offer support and advice. Now the government
office has enlisted student organizations to act in the fashion
of community ambassadors, Aksoy said.
Within a few hours of the terrorist attacks, members of the
Turkish Student Association sent letters to the Forty-Niner
office condemning the actions and offering their support.
They set up tables and handed out deserts at the Middle East
cultural fair during multi-cultural week.
The Washington consulate has provided a slide show that will
be shown Saturday, as well as books and pamphlets with information
about the country.
Turkey has 65 million citizens. About two-thirds of the country
is surrounded by the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The
rest of it shares borders with Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia,
Azerbaydzhan and Georgia. The east tip of the country touches
Greece and Bulgaria.
Admission and parking at the event is free.
