Trick-or-treat
into 'Madness'
By Sarah Langford
On-line Forty-Niner
With songs rehearsed
and costumes ready, the members of the Cal State Long Beach
Symphony Orchestra are set to perform two Halloween concerts
tonight in the Daniel Recital Hall at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Macabre Madness,
the title for this year's fifth annual event, will feature
music with dark and spooky undertones. The earlier concert
will be lighter in tone and more 'kid-friendly' but includes
much of the music from the later show.
"This concert
is nothing like a typical, stuffy orchestra performance,"
said conductor Richard Rintoul, founder of the concert. "The
students in the orchestra always come up with really wild
costumes. The only limitations are that it must be comfortable
to perform in, and appropriately modest. Other than that,
anything goes."
The concerts will
include a piece by CSULB's faculty jazz composer John Prince,
"Trick-or-Treating in the Twilight Zone," which
audiences will love for its hilarious send-up of Hollywood.
The piece is about a group of students from CSULB that go
trick-or-treating and enter the twilight zone. It includes
theme songs from several popular TV shows and movies, such
as Edward Scissorhands, Bewitched and Batman.
"It's a really
wild experience," Rintoul said. "Sometimes the music
we'll perform is very forceful and scary; other times it's
fun and light-hearted. It's great because you never know what's
going to happen."
A Halloween carnival
will be held between the concerts, with a free buffet of food
from several local restaurants, as well as carnival games
with prizes, face painting, juggling, costume contests and
magic acts among the many activities offered. Audience members
are encouraged to dress in appropriate Halloween costume or
attire.
For tickets call
(562) 985-7000. The ticket price includes admission to one
of the concerts and the carnival.
