Poets slam with
force
By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner
Life...money...love...the
opposite sex...food...just some of the topics that poets sounded
off about at the Poet's Lounge Wednesday in the Soroptomist
House, featuring the Los Angeles Poetry Slam Team.
Open to all, people from every background and race spoke their
minds through their clever poetry, backed by stimulating raw
music with Congo drums and other unusual instruments.
In a place to voice one's mind, people performed their poems
with force, magnetism and vitality.
The room's ambience empowered the speakers with its dark setting
lit only by candles, while the audience relaxed in oversized
chairs.
As the night crept on, more people gathered to hear the resounding
words of people; people just like them, alike in their thoughts,
voicing their thoughts, baring their souls, unafraid with
grace and strength.
The team also mesmerized the audience with their honest expressions
of life.
Aside from performing about deep, serious issues, some comical
work was performed. One poem, called "Food" and
performed by Poetry, included hilarious rhymes that made the
entire house roar with laughter.
In contrast to addictions of drugs and alcohol, Poetry found
himself addicted to food. He continued to talk about the suffering
of a food addiction; the troubles and the cravings as well
as the downside to living close to the donut shop.
He said that he found it difficult to not run to it late at
night. As Poetry wove in rhythm and playful words, his continuous
theme revolved around how he is everyday; how he can get his
drug at the supermarket, and how no one takes his addiction
seriously because it is just food.
Another poet from the team, Onari, acted out a poem about
love. It was addressed to the woman that he was with and he
wanted her to love him like no other.
One line he wrote rang out like the way someone in love should
love another "love me like you got no more adjectives"
and he used the number 11 to represent that they are like
one person each stitched together.
All throughout the performance, the audience laughed and showed
their enthusiasm and appreciation for these poets presenting
themselves naked and expressing themselves openly without
any inhibitions.
With a constant central idea of love and life, the women in
the audience were greatly moved; the men felt the vibes coming
from the poets and everyone walked away wowed.
