As the world grooves

By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner

DJs and dancers from over 100 cities in 45 countries will unite Saturday in support of world peace and healing.

Earthdance kicks off its fifth year dedicated to uniting the world through electronic music.

The highlighted event is a linkup between all cities with every DJ playing the same track, "Prayer for Peace" at midnight, London time (4 p.m. PST).

The organization supports five global charities: the environment, the Indigenous Tribes, the welfare of children, the freedom of Tibet and inner city issues. The inner city issues are a part of what Earthdance is launching this year, Earthdance Urban, which will focus on youth projects and homelessness.

The annual event is a focal point for supporting a global community; a community that also has international youth present their music, art and technology on creative platforms provided throughout the event.

First conceived in 1997, Earthdance focused on the troubles of the Tibetan people. Throughout the years, Earthdance has become known as a highly successful event by people like the London secretary for the Dalai Lama.

Earthdance will be broadcast worldwide via Internet on Oct. 13. Earthdance hopes to surpass last year's success, uniting people of all races as they dance together for a common cause. The broadcast will be a 12-hour synchronized cybercast that anyone from anywhere can watch by logging on to www.earthdance.org.

Earthdance 2000, a compilation CD, is available for people to buy. Moby, Underworld, Medicine Drum and Groove Armada are just a few who donated tracks to the CD.

The closest location from Cal State Long Beach will be at the San Fernando Valley at the Hansen Dam Recreation and Parks outdoor grass area. The address is 1170 Foothill Blvd in Lake View Terrace. The event starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m.

The line-up for Hansen Dam includes Electric Skychurch, Donald Glaude, Taylor, John Kelley, Freddy Be and DJ Soul as well as more.

Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross, New York City Firefighters fund, Electronic Music Defense and Education Fund, We The People, Stop The DUMP (Desert Protection Projects for Environmental Justice and Awareness) and Gathering of the Tribes.

There are limited presale tickets at $20 per ticket. For ticket information go to www.groovetickets.com or www.booth7.net.
