Talent show raises money for research

By Ayako Ando
On-line Forty-Niner

The Associated Students of Social Work will host a faculty and student talent show, in the tradition of "Showtime at the Apollo," that will benefit a program for women with AIDS Friday at 7 p.m. in the Beach Auditorium of the University Student Union.

"The goal of this talent show is to raise funds for ASSW's faculty members and students to help HIV and AIDS impacted women," said Corey Miller, vice president of ASSW.

"This is our first time doing this type of fundraising event," he said.

In this two-hour talent show, 10 ASSW students, six women and four men, will perform songs and dances that have been practiced since June.

When Mary Vigil came in contact with women who were living with HIV and AIDS, she wanted to provide a place for them and for herself to talk about issues. Vigil then founded "A League of Their Own," a Long Beach organization for HIV and AIDS impacted women in 1996.

"The purpose of this organization is to keep a safe environment for women living with HIV and AIDS to feel comfortable, talk about issues, get support and build self-esteem," said Vigil.

They have organized three conferences in April, November and January for prevention of the illness and to educate and advise women.

The next activity, the Long Beach Women's HIV Conference, will be held on Oct. 13 at the West Coast Hotel in Long Beach to introduce the league's activities. The conference is in the works.

"We are looking for support because we need to educate more people about prevention in our community," Vigil said.

McCoy added: "We are planning to hold this kind of program annually."

For the talent show, which will cost nearly $500, ASSW has collected funds from cooperation and private donations.

McCoy is expecting to see at least 200 people in the audience at the show.

"Just come to the show on Thursday, and you can support and help people," she said.
