By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner

The Seventh Annual Widescreen Film Festival kicks off tonight at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, highlighted by such film classics as "Funny Girl," "Grease," and "American Graffiti."

"The festival is designed to promote widescreen films," said Gary Prebula, artistic director of the festival and Cal State Long Beach film department lecturer. He and the board of directors, which includes some of the most illustrious people in Hollywood like Faye Canin (second woman president of the Academy after her predecessor Betty Davis), chose the films.

"We wanted to create a film festival that would live beyond me," Prebula said.

The Jewish Federation of Orange County is sponsoring the first event, a 7:30 p.m. screening of "Funny Girl," starring Barbara Streisand.

"'Funny Girl' will be shown in dye transferred print in a version that was created for Streisand's approval by Columbia," Prebula said.

He also said that "Funny Girl" was going to be shown in was the best print available and the quality of this new print is better than when it was first released in the 1960s.

Friday features two surprise selections, which were unannounced when the brochures for the festival were printed. "How to Marry A Millionaire," starring Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall will be shown Friday at 8 p.m.

"This is the second film to ever be shot wide," Prebula said.

Following "Millionaire" will be George Lucas' "American Graffiti" at 10:30 p.m.

Of this film, Prebula said that it is a "wonderful, pristine print."

Saturday features a panel and a full slate of movies. At 11:30 a.m. will be a panel discussion entitled "Editing Wide Format Film." Panelists include Ed Abroms ("Blue Thunder," "Sugarland Express"); Neil Travis ("Dances with Wolves," "Patriot Games,"); Wayne Wahrman ("U-571"", "Charlie's Angels"); George Hively ("Lucky Lady," "Movie, Movie") and Eric Sears ("Original Sin," "Encino Man").

"Grease," starring starring Olivia Newton-John, and John Travolta will be shown at 1 p.m. Director Randal Kleiser and Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) will be there to introduce the film and hand out prizes for a costume contest

"There will be a projection so the audience can sing along with the songs," Prebula said.

"Roxanne," starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah, will be shown at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" will be shown. Prebula said this is the studio print that will celebrate its 20th anniversary. "Poltergeist" will be shown at 9:30 p.m.

"It will be shown in brand new print," Prebula said.

Sunday will close with a Cinematographer/Production Designer Panel which will discuss the challenges of performing their special crafts when working in wide format.

Three movies will follow the panel. "The Adventures of Robin Hood" will be shown at 1 p.m., David Lean's Academy Award-winning "Lawrence of Arabia" will be shown at 3:30 p.m. and "Carmen Jones," which stars Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte will close out the festival at 7 p.m.
