'Bandits' on the
run tonight
By Greg Smith
On-line Forty-Niner
An advanced screening
of the new Barry Levinson film, "Bandits," will
start at 7 p.m. tonight at the University Student Union.
"Bandits" is based on the true story of two criminals
who broke out of prison in Oregon and embarked on a bank-robbing
spree through California with the ultimate goal of financing
a legitimate life in Mexico. In real life, the two were the
most successful bank robbers in U.S. history.
Bruce Willis stars as the suave, irresistible Joe and Billy
Bob Thornton plays his hypochondriac partner Terry. Rounding
out the cast is Cate Blanchett as Kate; a housewife, who is
bored with her life, that hits Terry with her car and eventually
joins the thieves on their journey.
The interesting twist is the way that Joe and Terry rob banks.
They kidnap bank managers the night before the robbery and
use them to enter the bank in the morning before staff and
customers arrive, earning themselves the name "sleepover
bandits." Complicating everything, both men fall in love
with Kate while she falls for both of them, seeing the two
as a single, perfect man.
The free screening of "Bandits," written by Harley
Peyton, will be played at the USU small auditorium. All attendees
will receive door gifts and the planning commission will be
raffling off special prizes.
Tickets to the screening are available in the Planning Commission
office in the USU. "Bandits" is rated PG-13 and
opens nationwide Friday, Oct. 12.
