Art museum exhibit:
All by hand.
By Max Evans
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner
Damien Fakes, 27,
walks past the University Art Museum everyday on his way to
class.
"I've been
here for all this time and have never once been inside,"
said the liberal studies major, pointing to the wiry steel
sculpture in front of the Art Museum. "It looks
like it would pretty cool though."
Stacey Atchley,
community relations coordinator at the Art Museum, said she
would urge students such as Damien to make it a point to drop
in sometime this semester.
"This is a
great place to get away from school," Atchley said.
"Between classes, you can just come here and get away
from everything, even if it's for just a little bit."
The Art Museum's
current exhibition, "By Hand: Precision, and Repetition
in Contemporary Drawing," showcases the drawings of 26
artists who have went against the rising trend to use computers
to produce images, Atchley said. These artists, who
come from Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Dublin and
London, created their works strictly with hand-held tools.
"By Hand"
is part of the "Tri-Cal State Drawing Exhibition,"
which also includes Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Fullerton.
The reception for "By Hand" will be at the Art Museum
on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m.
On Oct. 30, two
new exhibitions will be installed. They include the
sculptures of Gay Outlaw and the paintings of abstract expressionist,
Lee Krasner. Krasner was recently portrayed in the film
"Pollock."
Each spring semester,
the Art Museum hosts "Insights," which displays
the works of CSULB art students, Atchley said. The works
of the faculty are displayed every two years in the fall semester.
The Art Museum
has been at CSULB since 1973. In 1984 and 1988, the
Art Museum was accredited by the American Association of Museums.
This accreditation
places the Art Museum within the top 10 percent of the nation's
7,000-plus museums, said Atchley. The California Arts
Council said the Art Museum was among the top six art institutions
in California.
The Art Museum
is located in the North Campus Center, across from the College
of Business Building. The Art Museum's fall hours are
Tuesday through Thursday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday through
Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Mondays and on campus
holidays.
Admission is free
but a donation of $3 for adults and $1 for students is suggested.
This money, along with numerous grants, such as the Getty
Grant Program, financially supports the Art Museum, Atchley
said.
"It's definitely
a good investment," Atchley added.
