Technology-free artists to discuss exhibit

By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner

The new "By Hand" exhibition opened in late August at the University Art Museum in conjunction with a series of different programs including music, symposiums and gallery talks.

"By Hand" includes artists from all over the world who have completed artwork by hand without any computerized, mechanical or other tools.

"The images are very intricate and complicated," said Stacey Atchley, director of public relations for the University Art Museum. "You would think that some kind of tools were used, but they were not."

Atchley said that some of the drawings are very unconventional and that the exhibition includes 3-D pieces.

"The exhibition is representative of the new direction art is taking," Atchley said, categorizing the movement as "micro-art."

So far there has been positive feedback about the exhibition, including a review done by the L.A. Times, Atchley said.

Free programs are held in conjunction with the exhibition as a way to celebrate the works and the artists, such as a new music noon concert held in conjunction with "By Hand" at the University Art Museum. Other special programs held are gallery talks by curators, artists and other experts.

This Saturday, a symposium will be held in conjunction with "By Hand" at the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall.

The full-day symposium will inspect the role of drawing in contemporary art. The first half of the day, titled "Contemporary Discovery II: The Role of Drawing in the 21st Century," will have two panels. The morning panel will take a look at how contemporary artists work with the details in their drawings. The afternoon panel will discuss the role of drawing in art today. The panels will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m. and is free to the campus and the community.

The second part of the "Contemporary Discovery II Symposium" will hold a lecture by Jim Dine titled "2001 Zeitlin Lecture." He will discuss the role drawing has played in his art. The lecture is from 5 to 6 p.m. and tickets are $10. The event is sold out, but everyone is invited to attend the "Contemporary Discovery II" part of the symposium.
