CSULB stumbles upon 'Serendipity'

By Greg Smith
On-line Forty-Niner

Can true love, bound by fate, happen twice - That is the premise of Miramax film's new romantic comedy "Serendipity," screening tonight at 7 p.m. at the University Student Union small auditorium.

"Serendipity" tells the story of Jonathan Trager (John Cusak) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale), who meet and fall in love one cold night in New York City. Although both are in serious relationships, the two set out to prove their love is real by letting fate take control of their future. Sara suggests that they separate and if they are meant to be together, they will find their way back into each other's lives.

Ten years later, both Jonathan and Sara are engaged to be married and separately decide to search for one another by any means possible. With the help of their best friends, they search for clues in an attempt to beat fate to the finish line and prove that the love they felt for each other was real.

"Serendipity" is directed by Peter Chelsom, director of "The Mighty and Town and Country" and is written by Marc Klein.

Cusak ("High Fidelity") and Beckinsale ("Pearl Harbor") are supported by a cast of comedy alum's including Jeremy Piven ("Very Bad Things"), as Jonathan's best friend and obituaries editor for the New York Times, and Molly Shannon ("Saturday Night Live") as Sara's lesbian best friend who owns a candle shop.

Rounding out the cast are John Corbett ("Sex in the City"), newcomer Bridget Moynahan as Sara and Jonathan's respective fiancées and Eugene Levy ("American Pie") as a comedic Bloomingdale's salesman.

The free screening of "Serendipity" is open to all students and will be held in the USU. "Serendipity" is rated PG-13 and opens nationwide Oct. 5.
