River Band jams upstream

The Carpenter Performing Arts Center will play host, Sunday, to the River City Brass Band, a 29-piece brass and percussion group from Pittsburgh, PA, as part of the Long Beach Community Concert Series. The band is planning a patriotic and eclectic show that will appeal to people with many different tastes in music.

Attendees can expect a patriotic two-hour program, said Milt Orkin, River City Brass Band touring coordinator and baritone player. The program will include renditions of "The Armed Forces Salute," "America the Beautiful," marches by Henry Fillmore and John Phillip Souza and a big band version of "Old Man River."

"This will not be just a formal concert," said Orkin. "There will be some humor and fun. (Conductor) Lou Cassini has a nice repore with the audience."

In September, the River City Brass Band released a new CD entitled "All American," that, according to their web site, includes "13 selections by American composers featuring Broadway, big band, movie themes and the acclaimed Civil War Fantasy." The group plays approximately 120 concerts each year, including 50 to 60 tour dates across America.

"We are the only year-round brass band in the country," said Orkin.

B-J Sherwin, president of the Long Beach Community Concert Association said that she has been trying to book the River City Brass Band for five years.

"They are the best in the world," said Sherwin. "Their virtuosity is untold."

This is the third season the Long Beach Community Concert Association has been holding performances at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center on campus at Cal State Long Beach. The non-profit group has approximately 900 to 1,000 season ticket subscribers.

"We are very pleased with the (Carpenter Center)," said Sherwin. "Regardless of where you sit, you can see and hear well."
