Backstage Cabaret ready to hit stage

By Ayako Ando
On-line Forty-Niner

South Coast Chorale will open its 12th season with "Backstage Cabaret," at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center tomorrow and Saturday.

"We have been working on this program since June," said Artistic Director Bob Phibbs.

Phibbs said this concert would be different from other concerts people have seen at theaters.

"In this concert, audience who usually sit facing the stage, will be seated on the table sets on the stage that are decorated as a cabaret in San Francisco," Phibbs said. "The performers and the audience stay close to each other, so the audience may feel that they are in the real cabaret."

In "Backstage Cabaret," 42 members of SCC will perform 18 songs.

"These 18 songs have a wide variety of styles," Phibbs said. "Some are like rap numbers and some are in slow tempo such as ballad, so I think the audience can enjoy the combination of music."

Phibbs also said that three of the 18 songs were original songs created by individual singers in SCC.

Individual members, small groups and the entire chorus will be performing in this two-hour concert.

"The main purpose of this concert is entertainment," Phibbs said.

Bob Gabriel, a Long Beach resident, who plans to attend the concert said: "Since I have been anxious about the happenings in New York, I hope I can get relaxed with the performance,"

SCC has been performing to present the positive images of the lesbian and gay community in Long Beach and Orange County through its choral music performances since 1990.

"We will come together and continue presenting entertainment because we love singing," Phibbs said,

The concert will start at 8 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $35 for each night. For tickets and more information, call the Carpenter Canter at (562) 985-7000.
