Women's sirens
to sound off today
By William Marshall
Daily Forty-Nine
The first program
of this year's Words of Wisdom series, "Sirens Between
the Lines," will be held in the Informal Lounge in the
University Student Union today at 7 p.m.
Natalie Maldonado,
Susannah Rodriguez-Drissi and Roxana Rivera will be presenting
their work to celebrate Latina heritage during their night
of poetry, prose and music. Prior to the evening's featured
artists, there will be an open-mic for all women. Sign-ups
are from 6:45 to 7:15 at the Women's Resource Center and may
be phoned in to (562) 985-8576.
All three women
presenting are CSULB students and have extensive backgrounds
in Latina heritage with many different mediums of work.
Natalie Maldonado
sings "La Nueva Trova ? una gran cancion," which
lyrically reflects the changing political and social time
of the 60s through the 90s in Latin America and Europe.
While working toward
her master's of fine arts degree in poetry and teaching, Roxana
Rivera has found her own voice in sharing her experiences
as a Chicana in Southern California. Rivera is a published
poet and is also coordinating the event through the Women's
2Resource Center.
"We're expecting
a small turnout, but hoping to draw more students since changing
the location of the event," Rivera said.
Also sharing her
poetry during the event is Susannah Rodriguez-Drissi, an artist
and comparative literature major. She has been previously
been published in "Imagenes, Capitulo II," an anthology
of Latin-American poets living in the United States, "Full
Moon" by Blue Rabbit Press and "20 de Mayo,"
Southern California's Cuban community newspaper. Most recently,
her article "City of Angels" was published in the
guest column of "The Tidings." Her work is also
currently on exhibit at infiniterace.com.
Along with her
poetry, Rodriguez-Drissi will present her documentary video,
"Cuba, my dad and me." The video is described as
"a powerful and original autobiographical snapshot of
a young Cuban woman's attempt at reconciliation with her father
? a lyrical and visual memoir of the fundamental tensions
between two different worlds."
Siren's Between
the Lines is a monthly series, showcasing women's writing
and performing their work and is co-sponsored by the Women's
Resource Center, Women's Studies Student Association and the
Associated Students, Inc. Women's Commission at CSULB.
