Big gun Cheryl Weaver received several high honors
from the Big West Conference Monday, rewarding her
diligent work on the court for the women's volleyball
team.
She was
joined by three other 49ers who also earned spots
on all-conference teams.
Weaver
was named the Big West's co-player of the year, first
team all-conference and the conference's player of
the week. This is the junior middle blocker's second
selection onto the first team.
Her impressive
statistics include 4.6 kills per game, 1.6 blocks,
a .332 hitting percentage and 2.4 digs per game for
the season. Weaver also ranks first in the Big West
in kills, third in blocks and seventh in hitting percentage.
Middle
blocker Tayyiba Haneef was named to the first team
all-conference for the second year in a row. Haneef
is second on the team with 4.0 kpg, 1.0 bpg and a
hitting percentage of .372.
Outside
hitter Brittany Hochevar earned a spot on the second
team for her 12 assists per game as a setter. She
is currently averaging 2.9 kpg and 3.4 dpg. She also
leads the Big West with 60 service aces. This is Hochevar's
first selection to the all-conference team.
Elisha
Thomas, a constant spark for the 49ers, was also named
to the second team. She is averaging 2.9 kpg and 1.1
bpg for the season. Thomas ranks eighth in the conference
in blocks and it was also her first selection.
These four
players will help guide the No. 13-ranked 49ers into
the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which begins
Thursday in San Jose. The team opens play against
San Jose State on its quest to the Final Four in Richmond,
VA.
