Athlete of the Week

Elgazzar anchored the undefeated 49ers in both games of the season-opening road trip to Connecticut last weekend.

Aside from her play in the 3-2 win against Binghampton University on Sunday, Elgazzar's performance in the overtime periods Saturday against Fairfield University assured a tie decision for her team.

Next up for the sophomore and her fellow 49ers is today's home opener against the University of Nevada at 3 p.m. at George Allen Field.

This is the first in a weekly series that will give recognition to Long Beach State athletes for their accomplishments on the playing field.

Coach's comments

Head Coach Julie Cochran said Wednesday that Elgazzar is playing with confidence and communicating very well with her teammates.

Cochran was especially impressed with the sophomore's performance against Fairfield.

"She probably played the best game I've ever seen her play," Cochran said. "There were like three huge saves in that game. She was quick, courageous and on fire."

Elgazzar also stopped a point-blank shot with only three seconds remaining in the first overtime period to extend the standoff.

"That shot was going in," Cochran said. "So she absolutely saved the game for us."
