Women's soccer team on five-game losing streak

Staff reports

San Diego did not prove hospitable for the Long Beach State women's soccer team this past weekend.

The 49ers were shut out twice 1-0 to San Diego State on Sunday and 3-0 to the University of San Diego on Friday.

The shutout losses, which dropped the team's record to 3-5-1, increased the soccer team's current losing streak to five games and marked the first time in 49er history that it has been shutout in back-to-back games.

In Sunday's game the Aztecs took the lead when freshman Kim Castellanos scored at the 30-minute mark with an 18-yard shot, assisted by Becky Pirilman and Fay DeLeon.

The win raised the Aztecs' record to 3-7 and snapped a six-game losing streak.

SDSU dominated the first half, out-shooting the 49ers 10 to five, though Long Beach recovered in the second half, posting eight shots to the Aztecs' two.

The 49ers missed their best scoring opportunity ten minutes from the end of the game when freshman Lacy Brown's shot was blocked by Aztec goalie Erin Haentjens.

The rebound fell to freshman Marcia Rewoldt, but her follow-up shot was also blocked by Haentjens.

Freshman Ali Efstratis had the 49ers final scoring chance, but her shot sailed over the bar.   Jihan Elgazzar, 49er sophomore goalie, recorded five saves on the game to Haentjens' four.   Rewoldt led the 49ers with four shots in the game, bringing her team-leading total to 22 for the season.

On Friday, the 49ers were unable to overcome three first-half goals posted by USD.

In the 29th minute, junior forward Stephanie Barnier scored her team-leading eighth goal from 10 yards out on a play assisted by Tricia Gordon.

Six minutes later freshman Katie Allen headed in a goal assisted by Barnier and Alexis Obeji.

The Toreros notched the final goal of the game in the 43rd minute when junior Susan Spencer scored from an assist by Colleen Fogarty.

For the game, the Toreros had 19 shots to the 49ers eight.

LBSU returns home Friday for a match against UNLV  at 3 p.m. before resuming Big West Conference play Sunday  against UC Irvine at 1 p.m. at George Allen Field.
