Give hope
for the holidays
As mission
leaders are preparing for their annual Christmas dinner,
they are facing a lack of donations.
Even with
our strong economy, people have donated far less to
the mission this year, say mission representatives.
Whether or not we feel it, it is up to us to help
those who are not as blessed as ourselves.
Various
organizations have done food and toy drives on campus.
The U.S. Marines are conducting their "Toys for
Tots" drive and many Southland theme parks have
their own collections. Though admirable, this is not
enough.
Even with
all these charitable organizations, the mission still
relies primarily on donations from individuals in
the community. We all know that it is easy to look
away from the misery that surrounds us. But if we
confront that misery, maybe we can make it a little
better.
The holidays
are meant to be a time of celebrating with friends
and family. And whether or not we admit it, not everybody
is that fortunate and some rely on others to give
that holiday spirit.
Now is
the time to give a little more of us. Be honest, who
does not have something they could donate to help
some one else have at least a merry Christmas? Whether
it is an old pair of shoes, a warm jacket or some
extra food, what we do not necessarily need might
make the difference between happy holidays and just
another cold night for someone else.
That is
what the holidays are all about, warmth, giving and
celebrations. Can't we share ours with people who
might not otherwise get to experience those things?
