President
gives words of wisdom
Dear 49ers:
At your
convenience, I want to invite you to visit the Spidell
electronic classroom in the University Library.
It was built with money donated by one of our alums,
Robert Spidell, and it is considered one of the best
high-tech classrooms in the country.
Take advantage
of the many student programs offered in the Spidell
Classroom by contacting the Library Instruction Office
at (562) 985-8370.
I also
want to remind you about the women's volleyball battle
between The BEACH and UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday. Remember, tickets are free to students.
Prior to the game, at 5 p.m., the Alumni Association
will be hosting a pre-game luau. If you are interested,
call the office at (562) 985-5252 to order a $15 ticket
for the dinner luau.
We are
honored to have two special guests on campus Wednesday.
Dr. Alvin Poussaint, clinical psychiatry professor
at Harvard University, and Dr. Amy Alexander are scheduled
to give a lecture to the university at 1 p.m. in the
Union Ballroom. Several academic departments on campus,
including Social Work and Black Studies are sponsoring
this important event.
I urge
you to attend the Candidates Forum in the UTC-127,
on Thursday, Oct. 26. The Department of Political
Science, the League of Women Voters of Long Beach
and the American Association of University Women are
sponsoring the event. This is a good chance for you
to be informed about the candidates before you cast
your vote on Nov. 7. Also on Oct. 26 is the eighth
annual open house at the University Bookstore for
our faculty authors. Come meet your professors who
have recently written books.
Finally,
on Oct. 31, our hard-working Staff Council has
again planned an amazing "Spooktacular"
in which departments across the campus compete. Come
join us for refreshments in the Center Courtyard of
the Union, and watch as the judges select the best
of this year's Halloween costumes, department decorating
and food competitions. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy
the fun-time noon hour with your university staff
members.
Go
BEACH!
Sincerely,
Robert C. Maxson
