Design students to present 'Winter Carnival' today

By Michael Watanabe
Daily Forty-Niner

The sights and sounds of a carnival put on by the Design Student Association will come to Cal State Long Beach today, on the lawn in front of the Design Building from 2 to 8 p.m.

The first Winter Carnival serves mainly as a fundraiser, said Shannon Linnea, an interior design senior and fundraising chairwoman of DSA. But the event also serves to "draw other departments down to see what we do."

The carnival will include inflatable boxing gloves and henna temporary tattoos. There will also be standard carnival games, such as a beanbag and ring toss.

There will also be a barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips and soda for $5. A $1 drawing will be held with prizes ranging from a gift certificate from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, to a high-end task chair.

Besides fun and games, there will also be professionals from interior, architectural and industrial design.

The carnival is a chance to "let them see what we're doing and what kind of work we're creating now," Linnea said. "A lot of us make contacts at the same time."

The money raised will help to fund the design department and the senior thesis presentation. During this event, seniors present their thesis papers to interior and industrial designers.

The presentation is a show and helps design graduates obtain jobs, Linnea said.

The DSA is a student organization, but at times it serves as a support group.

"We try to have functions within the department to help the students come together." Linnea said. "The upper division had a portfolio review presentation, where we showed what we had done for portfolio review to the lower division, who are now going to go through [the process.]"
