Fourteen
sororities and fraternities gathered in the Student
Union Multipurpose Rooms Monday, to recognize the
accomplishments of Greek Week and award winners for
the past year.
Greek Week,
an all-Greek philanthropy event that donates to a
different charity each year, helped raise $3,500,
which was donated to the AIDS Foundation, according
to Student Life and Development.
CSULB President
Robert Maxson started the night off with praise.
"I
love Greeks, right now I am missing Monday night football
to be here," Maxson said. "In this room,
tonight, are the men and women of Long Beach State.
No organization at Long Beach has prospered more than
the Greek."
Awards
were given to the 21 men and women that received a
4.0 GPA last semester.
Usually,
the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council hold their
awards ceremony separate from Greek Week, according
to Student Life and Development. All Greek related
events were held together this year.
This year,
Greek Week was held the week of Oct. 9th. Greek Sing
is the most competitive part of the week, held in
the Carpenter Center.
Every person
participating paid a $5 entry fee that went toward
the AIDS Foundation.
Greek Sing
is a competition where a sorority and a fraternity
are paired up to put together the best ten-minute
skit.
Each skit
is then judged and awards are given to the first,
second and third place winners.
"Even
though we all have our separate houses," said
Christina Stein, junior communications major, "I
think doing things as a whole is a great way to bring
the system together, fraternities and sororities."
There are
seven President's Award categories for both Panhellenic
and IFC. IFC gave out two awards for each category.
Delta Chi
fraternity won all seven awards and the overall President's
Award.
